The Fisherman Poem
This poem came about looking out the window and watching my husband walking back and forth from the front of the house to the garage, doing all the little jobs that the end of a day out fishing entails, looking tired and a bit sun beaten.
Our black lab, Muffin, was gracefully and with a spring in his step, trotting in front of him. Muffin looked like he was the regal, seafaring leader of the expedition, worthy of the fishing glory and it was my husband who had had an insignificant role in the background.
Typically when my husband is walking about outside, Muffin is the one following. I was fortunate with this poem as it felt like one of those ‘given’ poems that come together relatively easily and in a short period of time. If only they were all like that!
Much gratitude to Arts Murihiku for this opportunity to share a poem and the Dan Davin Literary Foundation for their many writing workshops
