Mailbox 01: Artwork by Nathan Todd
Appeared in The Southland Times on Friday 15 March, 2024.
The first Mailbox print artwork was created by an Artist from the C.S. Art Whare Toi Studio in Waihōpai, Murihiku.
C.S. Art Whare Toi is an Arts Studio dedicated to providing access to the Arts for individuals with disabilities or mental health challenges. In June 2024, alongside a group exhibition at Whare Taupua, the studio will celebrate 20 years of operation!
At its core, C.S. Art Whare Toi embraces a philosophy of inclusion, acceptance, and belonging. Every week, the studio opens its doors to over 40 artists who participate in one of its six community Art classes.
When funding allows, external kaiako are invited to lead music, stone carving and art wānanga under the C.S. Art umbrella. The studio also holds annual exhibitions at Whare Taupua Community Arts Space in Waihōpai, supported by Arts Murihiku.
Speaking about the studio, one Artist said: “It’s a safe place. I don’t have to put up my shield. I come and learn and develop my art abilities. It’s a place where I can come and learn at my own pace. I can be my true self. I can come in that door and go ‘Whew, I’m home‘.” M.H.
