Mailbox 11: An Anonymous Artist
Appeared in The Southland Times on Tuesday 8 October
At the Night of the Arts on May 17th in Waihōpai’s central SIT Arcade, a lengthy
life drawing session unfolded, capturing the magic of an unexpected moment
between artist and passerby.
An unknown artist, armed with paper and charcoals, welcomed an impromptu
model into the spotlight. The model, casually holding an energy drink and a Night
‘n Day burger, became an unwitting collaborator in the artistic process. What
began as a simple encounter slowly evolved into an hours-long session.
The length of time afforded the artist the chance to dive deep into the model’s
form—observing the casual stance offset by the tension of standing still for so
long, and the essence of the human sitting in front of them
As the minutes stretched on, the sense of spontaneity that initially characterised
the scene shifted into something more profound. The extended time gave way to
an unexpected connection, where the artist’s hand and the model’s stillness
became part of a shared experience, capturing the extraordinary within the
everyday.
