Southland can often feel a little isolating. We’re a long way from the likes of Wellington or even Christchurch, but that doesn’t mean we’re any less talented. Arts Murihiku want to make sure artists and practitioners in Southland are getting all the opportunities our counterparts in larger cities are, so we’re compiling a list of art awards and exhibitions around New Zealand. Get your diaries ready.

Should I enter an award show?
Whether you’re an emerging or established artist, or somewhere in between, carefully researching each award is vital. Here’s what you need to look for:
The Pros
- Awards can be an excellent form of advertising
- You can test new media, or styles
- New audiences will see your work
- You can earn money!
Things to check before entering an art award
- Is it a good fit for you?
- Do you have to sell the work?
- Can you have exhibited before?
- What dimensions or media are they asking for?
- How long will the work be exhibited?
