Bakker’s BFA studies focused on the oppression and stigmas of the world. Delving into the meanings of hedonism and the flavours of ‘what’ freedom from idealism looks like. Here came her bird’s heads, representing this life without the chaos of idealism. Free to sing and dance when everyone is watching.
Her contemporary play on ideas and symbolism are often humorous, breathtakingly detailed and at times sensual. Wallpaper is often her canvas, quietly reminding us that there is always a history behind every move, thought, or object. This also touches on the practice of decorating, and creating your own unique space. The interpersonal battle of ‘becoming part of the wallpaper’, which can be negative or positive, you fit in, or you don’t exist?
“Who am I, What am I, Which wallpaper do I blend in with today, which one tells the story, or which one contrasts it best? There’s a unique, unexplainable joy about the colours and textures of wallpapers, sifting through my rolls, maybe picking blue if I’m feeling blue, ripping off a desirable length, the textures, and the smell. There’s history being relieved, and my own story being told.”

Her works are periodically exhibited in galleries, libraries and restaurants in NZ, including the Little River Gallery. Her mural works adorn public places, streets, hotels, tennis courts, and campsite kitchens, including The Old Shipping Office Bathroom and extending to the Kofu Yamanashi Zoo in Japan.
Art provoked from themes of freedom, flight, self-love, uniqueness, life, experience, and journeys migrating around simple pleasures, and moment appreciations.
