Pop-up Exhibition Brushstrokes
Fellow artist Fiona Michels and I are excited to bring you Brushstrokes — a pop-up exhibition running from 23 October to Sunday 2 November. Bursting with colour, energy, and personality, our exhibition showcases bright and joyful works from two well-known Southland artists. There’s something for everyone, and we’re sure our pieces will bring a smile to your face. We’d love for you to stop in and say hello as you make your way around the Arts Trail!
Dawn Barry
Born and educated in Auckland, I briefly attended Elam school of Fine Arts, leaving to travel and work my way around NZ. A southward momentum led to Stewart Island/Rakiura where I lived & began painting again after workshops with John Scott and Julia Faithful. I’ve painted, exhibited & taught since then while also working as a Graphic Designer in various places around NZ.
My work has always engaged with the environment & conservation themes. Over the years I’ve worked on series including Rakiura, Coastal Icons, South Coast, and Whakapapa, exhibiting in group and solo shows.
Having lived on both sides of Foveaux Strait, I’ve developed a deep connection to this area of wild winds, moody dramatic skies, and spectacular coastal landscapes. The south coast also has a calm and incredibly serene side – a place of contrasts and contradictions that I find fascinating.
