Nicole Wright – Breathing New Life into Found Materials
Working from a mini-studio at Whare Taupua for the Southland Arts Trail, Nicole Wright creates mixed-media sculptures that celebrate animals and the natural world. Using air-dry clay, papier-mâché, beads, string, rope, and acrylic paint, her works come alive with texture and form, often finished with a protective water-based polycrylic.
Nicole’s creative process begins with discovery. She seeks out items that are unrecyclable or overlooked in op shops, transforming them into the foundations of her art. Each piece carries a history, given new meaning through her hands—objects once discarded are reimagined into unique, vibrant creations. Her work is both playful and thoughtful, reminding us of the beauty in renewal and the endless possibilities of second chances.
